PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) – We rely on the Valley’s canal system for our water, but some say the canals can be an eyesore. Saturday, you’ll get a chance to give your opinion on the first phase of a major canal upgrade.
There are “streetscape” projects and then there are “canalscape” projects. When it comes to Phoenix’s Grand Canal, officials want to make it a safer route for bicycle and pedestrian traffic, as well as more aesthetically pleasing.
“We have more canals here in Phoenix than Amsterdam and Venice combined,” said President and CEO of “Arizona Forward,” Diane Brossart.
The Grand Canal, in particular, is vital for bringing water to the Valley.
“What we’re trying to do is make sure that people recognize and celebrate that,” added City of Phoenix traffic engineer Kerry Wilcoxon.
City officials plan to re-integrate the surrounding neighborhoods with the Grand Canal through a project called “Grand Canalscape.”
